Model Renewable Portfolio Standard & Renewable Energy Credits Program

As a result of extraordinary success in promoting new wind power development in 2001, the Texas RPS has become a leading model for renewable energy development throughout the United States and globally. In recognition of his role in the development of the Texas program, Mike Sloan received a Special Achievement Award from the American Wind Energy Association in 2000.

Green Pricing Program Design

As Chairman of Austin's Sustainable Energy Task Force in 1997-1998, Mike Sloan played a key role in laying the groundwork and developing a green power program structure and details that have been effectively implemented by Austin's municipal utility. In fact, Austin Energy's GreenChoice program is nationally-acclaimed, ranking number one among regulated utilities in the U.S. for voluntary green power sales for 6 years (2002-2007).

Effective Educational Materials

As part of the Texas Infinite Power Campaign, Virtus Energy served as project manager for a national award–winning renewable energy education fact sheet series (21 topics). During 1994–1995, Virtus published “Texas Renewable Energy Resource Assessment: Survey, Overview, and Recommendations, which continues to be regarded as one of the finest statewide assessments of renewable resources.

Presentations on the Texas Policy

A Co-Chair of the Texas PUC's Renewable Energy Work Group, which laid the groundwork for the rule implementing a 2,000 MW renewable mandate, Sloan has taken the “Texas Success Story” beyond Texas' borders. A sought after presenter, Sloan has spoken and testified before numerous Congressional, industry, legislative and regulatory gatherings across the country and internationally.
